Generis – Groundbreaking technology for a new approach to AC drives

Generis represents the next generation of AC drive technology, delivering cost effective and highly reliable AC motor control combined with energy regeneration and low input current harmonics.

Generis has been designed to simplify control without compromising performance, offering improvements in heat generation, motor accuracy and overall system efficiency. This groundbreaking AC regeneration drive will also create reduced running costs and will possess simple safety circuits for Sprint Electric customers.

Gary Keen, director at Sprint Electric, comments: “Generis represents a new level for AC drive technology, using a unique patented switching technology that does not require a DC link. This provides full four quadrant control as standard, as well as unity power factor and minimal input current distortion. Four quadrant control removes the need for active front end drives or braking resistors, simplifying control of AC motors in complex applications.

“Our customers will appreciate the solid-state design, the improvement in lifespan and the reduced maintenance costs. Removing the DC link in an AC drive reduces harmonic distortion to the mains supply and improves drive efficiency. The drive will control all AC motor types with both open loop and closed loop available to maximise its range of application.

“For the past five years we have been partnered with Nottingham University designing the new Generis variable speed drive to control AC motors. Embedding ourselves in academia generated significant advantages for both the design and the manufacturing of the drive.

“This new technology can have a huge impact in helping to reduce global power consumption. AC motors represent a market over 40 times that of DC motors, but there is currently no range of inverters (AC Variable Speed Drives) available that delivers effectively on efficient regeneration. Generis fills a gap in the market by creating an AC drive capable of regenerative operation and ultra-low harmonics,” said Gary.
